The development of the city planning of Beijing is closely related to history and culture. The most prominent character of its layout is the axis stretching from north to south throughout the city. The Forbidden City—the main construction in the imperial time can be regarded as the first milestone. The second milestone is the Tiananmen Square which is extended from former royal forum named “Tian Jie“ next to Tiananmen Gate. The third one is the Olympic Center, which leads the axis stretching towards the north. The new construction has its epoch-making significance, because it has changed the historical trend of Beijing's urban development towards south along the axis.
