Ethical debate over death penalty is one of the important issues of contemporary applied ethics. The death penalty deterrence theory and the retribution theory are unable to provide ethical justification for capital punishment. This paper reveals and exposes the ethical defects of the two theories from the perspectives of consequentialism and deontology, which can help us get rid of some ethical obstacles lying in the way of abolishing death penalty.
