Building a new socialist countryside is a major historic task of China's modernization drive. The five requirements are to achieve "developed production, well-off life, c ivilized customs, clean surroundings and democratic administration". The development of production is the basis and the primary task for building the new socialist countryside. By "development of production" we mean improving productivity and increasing farmers'income, which, in turn, depend on the advancement of agricultural industrialization. Therefore, in the course of building the new socialist countryside, agricultural industrialization should be taken as the key task. Only through re-adjusting agricultural structure, choosing proper modes for agricultural industrialization and fostering its development, can the building of the new socialist countryside be speeded up.
