Gestapo could target anybody despite their social status, and no one could escape from it. Bound by no legal ties, Gestapo became the most frightening and efficient police institution, and they carried secret investigation in the whole country and Europe. With only 20, 000 or more secret police, Nazi Germany ensured its control of all Germans and, after 1939, all Europeans.
