英语语境:
Japan and Taiwan had experienced a sharp currency appreciation in the late 1980s. In that period, Japan and Taiwan's enterprises took full advantage of the financial markets, increasing the research and development expenses, upgrading of product structure and encouraging foreign direct investment outflows. As a result, the appreciation of Yen and NTD did not impair their export competence, but promoted structural upgrading of the two economies'export commidities and industry.
