At the end of the 16th century, Tsarist Russia conquered and occupied Siberia. During the 17th and mid19th, the Russian territory expanded to The Kurile Islands and Alaska. In 1867 the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million according to the “ Convention of Exchange about the Alaska”. As a consequence of the “ Treaty of Exchange about the Kurile Islands and Sakhalin Islands” in 1875 the Kurile Islands were transferred to Japan and again in 1905 Japan acquired sovereignty over the southern portion of Sakhalin. In August 1945 The Soviet Union occupied the Kurile Islands and Sakhalin Islands.
