There have been three encounters between Western Marxism and modernism since the 20th Century. During the three encounters, aesthetic criticism or cultural criticism were expressed in three different theoretical frames. They are realism, modernism and post-modernism. Each of them enriched and expanded the inherent nature of axial criticism in Marxism, forcing Marxist perspective an indispensable dimension in the study of the Western culture.
