The group consciousness of Confucian scholars as a social class was formed under political, economic, cultural and social conditions of Eastern Han Dynasty and it was manifested in their political ideals and behaviors. Their strong sense of social responsibility and political enthusiasm maintained the Eastern Han regime which was ruled by relatives of kings and eunuchs alternately. The scholars'group consciousness manifested a powerful force so that scholars could check and balance the imperial power, but also caused the two parties to break from each other. The disaster of partisan prohibitions symbolized the separation between the two, during which Confusion scholars were attacked and eunuchs further seized the power, and ultimately led to the demise of the Eastern Han dynasty.
