在哲学史上，对家庭思想的研究是从未终止的。摩尔根的《古代社会》一书总结了古代社会中存在的五种顺序相承的家族形态：血婚制家族、伙婚制家族、偶婚制家族、父权制家族、专偶制家族，并系统的论述了各个家族形态的产生构成及特点，从而记录了人类家族婚姻形态的发展过程。马克思对《古代社会》做了十分详细的读书笔记，最后写成《摩尔根<古代社会>一书摘要》。马克思对摩尔根的一些研究成果表示认同，并对摩尔根的思想进行合理性改造，打算写一部关于原始社会的著作，但这一愿望还并未实现，马克思就与世长辞了。

Morgan's Ancient Society summarizes the five sequence to each other family forms in ancient society: Blood marriage system family, Partnership marriage system family, Spouse marriage system family, Father family system in power, Specialzed spouse's family system, and systematic exposition of the various family forms of production, composition and characteristics, thus records the development process of the human family's marriage form. Marx did a very detailed study notes on the Ancient Society, writing Morgan's (Ancient Society> abstract at last. Marx agreed on some of Morgan's researches and rational transformation of Morgan's ideas. He intended to write a book on primitive society; however, Marx passed away and this desire has not been realized.
