The headman system of the Ladhulsi who live in the frontier area adjoining Burma and its operation is described and analyzed on the basis of fieldwork. In low differentiation ladhulsi society, the natural village (zhaizi or qhat in Lahu language) is a basic regional unit of the traditional political organization. Four headmen of the village (fur yier, cawr par, kaxie, ca leq) manage their own responsibility: of Buddha, of God of the qhat, of secular affairs and making and application of tools.
