汉语语境:

象形文字和图画文字是传统文字学上的两个术语，过去在指称外延上有重叠之处，在内涵上也有混淆，近来人们有意识地进行区分，认为图画文字是文字产生之后最初的发展阶段，而象形文字则是图画文字之后的阶段。在目前具体文字研究较为深入，文字类型学研究也有发展的情况下，有必要梳理这两个术语的使用历史，重新审视这对术语的使用规范。

英语语境:

Hieroglyph and pictogram are two terms in the traditional philology. In the past their alleged extension was overlapping and their connotation was also confusing. Recently people want to distinguish them and believe that pictogram was the initial stage of development after the appearance of characters and that hieroglyph was following the stage of pictogram. At present, study of specific characters is in-depth and character typology is also developed, hence, it is necessary to sort out the history of the use of these two terms to re-examine the their standard use.
