“文化”一词在西方的起源至少可以追溯到公元前4、5世纪的希腊。当时，希腊人已把文化世界(Nomos)与自然界(Physis)、文化定律(Nomol)与自然定律(Logos)区别开来。在这一区别中，自然指的是“不经过人类加工过的客观世界或自然宇宙。”而文化则是人造的现象世界，它是习惯、风俗、制度等等的总和。
英语语境:
The origin of the word "culture" in the west can be traced back to the fourth and fifth Century BC. At that time, the Greeks had the cultural world (Nomos) and nature (Physis), culture law (Nomol) and natural law (Logos) distinguished. In this distinction, nature refers to "the objective world or the natural universe without being processed by human." And culture is the phenomenon of artificial world, it is the sum of habits, customs, institutions, and so on.
