The booming and development of mediaeval cities is one of the important factors for the naissance of new economic relationships of the Western European society. But the cities of the Western Europe in the Middle Ages met lots of obstacles for its further development. Serfs were shunted aside and oppressed in urban areas, so there were few chances for a serf to become a freeman. Urban areas; therefore, lost some free labour forces which were available in society. The development of mediaeval guilds went against the development of cities. Commercial monopoly brought about lots of social contradictions to cities.
