民国时期，天津的中下层社会特别是一部分贫民，在彻底背弃封建贞操观念的同时，也走向了另一个极端，性行为失范和异化因而成为具有一定普遍性的社会现象。主要表现在妇女自愿为娼或丈夫逼妻为娼、共妻或租妻、婚外情等方面。这一局面与当时向近代转型时期的特殊社会背景紧密相关，但归根结底贫穷与生存的艰难才是造成这一切的最根本的原因。
