《文镜秘府论》所收《诗议》即传本《诗议》的前半,和传本《诗议》的后半以及皎然《诗式》,对很多问题的有不同看法,有的甚至走向两个极端。这二者可能不是作于同一时期,《诗式》定稿于贞元五年(789),作于皎然晚期,《文镜秘府论》所收《诗议》则当作于大历八年(773),甚至广德二年(764)之 前,作于皎然早期。这说明,从《诗议》到《诗式》,皎然的文学思想有一个变化发展过程。这个变化过程,可能与大历贞元年间诗歌观念的变化,与当时一些士人性格作风和马祖道一洪州禅的影响有关。
