Hu Shi began to establish a close relationship with Chang Kai-shek during the period of the publishing Independent Reviews from May 1932 to July 1937 while China faced more and more serious troubles of Japanese invasion. Hu Shi declared openly in 1938 that "no place to oppose the Government" which means that he was no longer against Kuomintang's control. On the contrary, he paid much attention to "some democratic elements" of Kuomintang's Government and Chang Kai-shek's progress.
