The IPA is an abbreviation for both the International Phonetic Association and the International Phonetic Alphabet of that association. The vowels found in languages can be compared with the cardinal vowels of IPA and described by reference to them. Based on the cardinal vowels, this study attempts to compare and analyze six groups of pronunciation errors that the present researcher has found in her teaching the students are likely to make either between Chinese and English sounds or between English sounds. The IPA cardinal vowel system serves as a shortcut to a successful mastery of English vowels as well as is compulsory for English teaching and learning.
