新闻由头也叫新闻根据，指的是新闻发布的依据或契机，即某一人物或事物之所以成为新闻的缘由、依据和引子。它是新闻的基本因素之一，也是决定新闻价值的重要方面。“新闻由头”包括两层意思:一、它是寻找一个新近发生或变动的事实为由头，把旧闻赋予“新闻味”的借助手段；二、它是以借助一个新近发生或变动的事实为由头，对一个专题或一个方面的问题，展开深层次挖掘，进行综合分析，向人们揭示一个宏观事实或新的思想认识问题。 新闻由头绝大多数在导语中就交待明了，也有的是在第二段的主体部分或背景材料中交待。
英语语境:
News peg refers to the basis of the news release, which also means the cause of news. It is one of the basic elements of news, and an important aspect of news value. News peg includes two meanings: first of all, it is a way to change an old event into news by using an up-to-date fact as the head. Second, it enable people to dig deep into news facts and makes integrated analysis by starting with a new fact. In most cases, news peg appears in the introduction, but sometimes it is confessed in the main body of second paragraph of or in the background material.
