20世纪中国人对科学的理解和应用经历了这样几个阶段:世纪初“科学”代替“格致”用语，新文化运动中请进“赛先生”；“科玄论战”折射出科学理性与传统人文的冲突；民国时期科学在艰难条件下发展，并常常被一些社会政治学说用作其真理性的标识；新中国成立以后科学在某些时期有较大发展，但常受到政治运动的严重干扰；改革开放以后科学得以正本定位，人们对其经济、社会和精神价值获得了正确认识。
英语语境:
Chinese people's comprehension and application to science experienced the following five stages in the 20th century: the term “GE ZHI” (the extension of innate knowledge) was replaced by the speech “science” at the beginning of the century and “Mr. Science” was introduced during the New Cultural Movement.“The debate of science and metaphysics” reflects the conflicts between science and the Traditional Humanity. During the years of the Republic of China, science developed with great difficulties and used to be recognized as a symbol of truthfulnessby some social and political schools .After the founding of P .R .C., Science experienced a relatively fast development in some periods, but it was often seriously disturbed by the political campaigns. Science has not properly positioned until the policy of Reform and Opening-up is implemented, when its economic, social and spiritual values are identified appropriately .
