Researchers have adopted a comparative perspective and analyzed the definition of the preferred term in ISO 25964-1, ANSI/NISO Z39.19-2005 and GB/T 13190-1991. Four characteristics have been summarized, namely, abstraction, uniqueness, relevance and variability. Then they studied the selection method of the preferred term in English Science & Technology Super-Thesaurus, and came up with 4 selection methods, which were respectively based on the source thesauri, the term frequency of literature, the Chinese thesauri, and the recommendations of experts and users. Finally they discussed the integrated use of different methods, the diversity of terminology translation, the priority of term frequency types, the variability of the preferred term, etc.

The co-word analysis method based on word frequency or co-occurrence word frequency is not sufficient to reflect the hierarchic semantic relations between term pairs. In view of this situation, researchers propose an improved co-word analysis method. The method embodies the hierarchic semantic relations between terms, between themes and documents, and reflects the theme evolution process on the semantic level, which is more microscopic and accurate.
