位于黄土高原、内蒙古高原和青藏高原交会处的甘肃、宁夏、青海是一个农业、牧业和农牧交错的地区，又是一个少数民族集聚的地区。由于居民的生产方式、生活方式和宗教信仰的不同，农村市场的构成也不同，在以农业经济为主的地区以集市贸易为主，而以牧业经济为主的地区则利用寺院会集进行贸易，庙会、花儿会作为农村市场的补充形式而存在。近代甘宁青农村市场，在市场构成、专业市场的形成等方面，既有全国农村市场的共性，也有西北区域市场的特性。晚清以来，周期性的社会动荡和自然灾害，以及地方军阀的横征暴敛，造成人口锐减，农村经济凋敝，农民日益贫困，购买力低下，农村市场衰退。同时，由于鸦片的大量种植，导致了西北农村市场畸形发展，出现了专门的鸦片市场。这些现象直到解放前夕也没有多大改观。

Located at the intersection of the Loess Plateau, the Inner Mongolian Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the Gansu-Qinghai-Ningxia region was in the modern period a region of agriculture, herding, and combinations of the two, with a large concentration of minorities. Because the residents'modes of production, ways of life and religions were different, the composition of rural markets varied as well: in areas dominated by agriculture, rural markets were mainly market fairs; in areas dominated by herding, people took advantage of temple assemblies to trade. Temple fairs and Hua'er fairs were a supplementary form of rural market. Some aspects of modern Gansu-Qinghai-Ningxia rural markets, such as market composition, the formation of specialized markets, and so on, not only shared in the general characteristics of rural markets throughout the country, but also had special characteristics peculiar to the Northwest China regional market. From the late Qing on, because of periodic social disturbances and natural disasters, as well as excessive taxes and levies imposed by local warlords, the population decreased drastically, rural economy languished, peasants became poorer and poorer, purchasing power fell, and rural markets declined. Meanwhile, the planting of large amounts of opium led to lopsided development in northwestern rural markets, and special markets for opium emerged. These phenomena persisted with little change up to the eve of liberation.
