As a strategist, Qi Jiguang activly threw himself into the war against the Japanese pirates in the frontier crisis of the Late Ming Dynasty. He took full charge of the defense affairs and formed his own military thought in his long-standing military career. Qi Jiguang's military thought went through such stages as foundation, formation, development and improvement, and had two theoretical sources: his military learning with the Seven Military Classics as textbooks and the Four Books and Five Classics as the core of Confucian teachings. The main contents of Qi's military thought include theories of troop training, military officer training and instructions of war. The theories are characterized with being practical, being close to actual combat and stressing actual effcet, thereby are highly appraised by the later generations.
