We often see that in western countries, companies, groups and individuals show their support to higher education by making donations for scholarships. Large donations are usually set up as perpetual scholarships in order to have a long-term role in funding. The Rhodes Scholarships is a typical representative of this kind of scholarship. Built and endowed 100 years ago, it has funded more than 8000 students to study at Oxford University. This paper analyzes the Rhodes scholarships and explores the reasons of its long-term survival and influence. The paper argues that its flexible adjustment system, extensive influence, sound governance structure, a positive crisis reponse, scientific investment management, strict selection criteria and close links with Rhodes Scholars are the most important reasons for its long-term survival and influence. This is a good reference for China's colleges and universities to set up perpetual scholarships.
