The subsumer is the term in Ausubel's meaningful speech learning theory, which refers to the original concept or proposition of an organizational structure in which new information is introduced into a cognitive structure. For example, suppose the students cognitive structure has a "quadrilateral" concept, in the study of "parallelogram" concept, the parallel four sides are included in the quadrilateral. If the students not only know the parallelogram, but also the general quadrilateral in common and the difference between the two, they get the meaning of this new concept "parallelogram". As the original "quadrilateral" concept and the new "parallelogram" concept is a generic relationship, and the original concept plays the role of organizing and defining the new one, so the original one is a subsumer.
