Disciples of the Pears Garden in the Tang Dynasty were in fact musicians who possessed outstanding skills. They mainly engaged in playing musical instruments, singing and dancing. They were different in status: some enjoying the same position as civilians, and some as low as guanhu or government officials'salves and maid-servants. Some held that disciples of the Pear Garden even possessed equal rights as high officials or scholar-bureaucrat in certain aspects. This has proved to be contradictory with the historical facts.
