朱次琦作为晚清南海鸿儒，提出“四行五学”说以正修身读书之道并以此为治学思想传诸后世。其修身“四行”以发挥程朱理学的道德论而见长，而读书“五学”则是通过挖掘儒学想中的“经世”因素，来纠正当时学术之弊病。其中体现着重“贱履”和“致用”的思想，在晚清国势日蹙的历史条件下，具有积极意义。

英语语境:

Zhu Ciqi, a famous scholar in Nanhai in the late Qing Dynasty, brought forward "four virtues" and "five areas of studies" to impart the right way of self cultivation and study. And they were passed on to descendants as the guidance of learning. The "four virtues" which direct self cultivation are good at applying the moral theories of Neo-Confucianism while the "five areas of studies" aims at rectifying the academic maladies with the "pragmatism" of Confucianism. The emphasis on practice and practical utility reflected in Zhu's thought exerted a positive role in the late Qing Dynasty which was on its way downhill.
