Fu Shan's calligraphic principle of "four dos and four don'ts"(the guideline for a gentleman to practise virtues) has been misunderstood and criticized since its proposal because people mixed up the two existing forms of calligraphy in the Ming Dynasty. One form is the desk calligraphy aimed at being read and supposed to be appreciated closely while the other is the wall calligraphy aimed at decorating and supposed to be appeciated distantly. The "four dos and four don'ts", which serve as the theoretical principles and artistic system of the wall calligraphy, was put forth by Fu based on the criticism and reflection over the rise and fall of the wall calligraphy works.
