Since the "New Math Movement" in the early 1960s, the content and structure of math education in American primary schools have undergone enormous changes. The theoretical system of arithmetic for primary school students was abandoned. Instead, concepts of advanced branches of math were introduced. And the structure was transformed from the previous "core-subject-oriented" to "parallel-subject-oriented". This history suggests that the changes could be the major cause for "mile-wide but inch-deep" math education in American primary schools. And China should not repeat the mistake during its own reform of math education in primary schools.
