汉语语境:
清代科举的初步考试中的童试，一般又叫做“小考”。凡童子开始应初试的时候称做“童生”，童生经过一定的考试选拔，在县里面选拔了以后到督学进行考试，督学考试合格就可以称做“秀才”了。
英语语境:
Tongshi in the preliminary examination of Qing Dynasty is generally called Xiaokao (examinations of selecting Xiucai in the Ming and Qing Dynasties). The boys who take the preliminary examination are called "Tongsheng" (pupil). The pupils would take the examination given by Duxue after they succeed in the selection in the county. Finally, they can be called "Xiucai" after they pass that examination.
